With confidence in Australia’s building industry at six-year highs, there’s never been a better time to reassess the fortunes of listed stocks significantly exposed to the much-beleaguered construction sector.
If the economic data responsible for driving the construction sector forward is any indicator, the momentum of cautious optimism looks set to continue.
Of the 23 ASX-listed stocks with varying exposure to residential property, just five achieve Skaffold’s preferred A1, A2, B1 and B2 scores for balance sheet quality and business performance. They are Leighton Holdings (LEI), Reece Australia (REH), Finbar Group (FRI), Beacon Lighting Group Ltd (BLX) and Tamawood (TWD).

Despite strong earnings growth from Coles, Bunnings, Officeworks and Kmart, Wesfarmers Skaffold Score has remained stable at B3. Since 2009 WES has generated a return on its equity of around 8%. Skaffold considers this average business performance. Less than 5% is considered poor.
The latest financial results for CSL, Nick Scali (NCK), Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Primary Healthcare (PRY), Carsales.com (CRZ), Mineral Resources (MIN), AMP, Santos (STO), Stockland (SGP), Leighton Holdings (LEI), GPT Group (GPT), DUET Group (DUE), OZ Minerals (OZL), UGL Limited (UGL), Southern Cross Media Group (SXL), Tox Free Solutions (TOX), Chandler Macleod Group (CMG), APN News and Media (APN) and ITL Limited (ITD), among others, also flowed through Skaffold.

It’s the last week of reporting season, and the upsets keep emerging. Regional airline Regional Express (REX) has held Skaffold’s second highest A2 Score for 5 of the past 10 years. REX has fallen to A3. So has Seymour Whyte. Other companies to update in Skaffold include Silver Lake Resources (SLR), Saracen Mineral Holdings (SAR), AV Jennings (AVJ), Corporate Travel Management (CTD), Global Construction Services (GCS), Harvey Norman (HVN), Challenger (CGF) and Perpetual (PPT).
